schema.abstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of titanium Morse taper abutments subjected to different values of fixation screw torque, through in vitro testing and the Finite Element Method (FEM). Twenty-four titanium implants with Morse taper connections (3.5 mm × 11.5 mm) were positioned in PVC cylinders at a 30° inclination. The implant/abutment assemblies were divided into four groups (n=6) according to the torque applied to the fixation screw: 9, 12, 15, and 18 N cm. Maxillary canine crowns in nickel-chromium alloy were fabricated and cemented with temporary cement. For mechanical cycling, a fatigue testing machine was used, applying a force of 100 N to the cingulum at 30° in relation to the long axis of the implant, for 1,000,000 cycles at 2 Hz and a temperature of 37°C. Torque loss was assessed before and after cycling. For fracture testing, the original torque was reapplied, and the specimens were subjected to an oblique force at 30° to the implant axis, with a 10 kN (1000 kgf) load cell and a displacement speed of 0.5 mm/min. For FEM analysis, the implant/abutment/crown assemblies were scanned by microtomography before mechanical cycling. From these images, a virtual model of each assembly was obtained, which were subjected to simulations with and without torque application, under an oblique load of 100 N at 30° applied to the cingulum region. Torque loss comparisons were made using a Linear Mixed Effects Model with a significant level of 5%. The results indicated statistically significant differences within all groups when compared before and after mechanical cycling (p < 0.05). Before cycling, there was no difference between the groups (p > 0.05). After cycling, the 9 N cm group showed a significant reduction in relation to the others (p < 0.05), while the 12, 15 and 18 N cm groups did not differ from each other (p > 0.05). After verifying the normality of the sample distribution of the fracture data, one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was applied, followed by Tukey's post-hoc test, with a significance level of 5%. A significant difference in fracture resistance was observed between the groups (p = 0.0004). The group with a torque of 18 N cm showed greater resistance, being superior to those of 9 and 12 N cm (p < 0.01). The 15 N cm group did not present a statistically significant difference in relation to the other groups (p > 0.05). Qualitative and quantitative finite element analysis showed that, with torque, the maximum stress was 251.89 MPa, concentrated in the initial region of the threads, while its absence resulted in a significant increase in stress, reaching 884.66 MPa at the implant-abutment connection. It can be concluded that the tightening torque significantly influences the mechanical behavior of the assembly and that its absence markedly increases the stress concentration at the implant-abutment junction.por
